Futurapolis – Innovation & High Forum

The sixth edition of Futurapolis was held in Toulouse on 24 and 25 November. Organised by “Le Point”, Futurapolis is a forum bringing together scientists, intellectuals, business leaders and public figures with a passion for technology to reflect and debate how our world can survive and prosper in the midst of technological change. The forum was held at emblematic locations around the Pink City such as the Faculty of Medicine, the Museum of Natural History and the Quai des Savoirs science museum and centre. Laurent Husson, President of CLIMATE CITY, gave a presentation at the Natural History Museum and attended a round table on Friday.

Early in the afternoon, Laurent Husson first gave a 15-minute presentation on the issues that led to the creation of CLIMATE CITY during the session devoted to “Technology will save the world”. This pitch session featured four innovators with technology projects to do just that. The session’s originality lay in the presentation at the beginning of the contribution of an object symbolising the various projects to arouse the public’s curiosity and make a lasting impression.

After short contributions from Erwan Kezzar, co-founder of the Ecole Simplon.co, Benjamin Böhle-Roitelet, founder of the Ekito start-up incubator and Céline Bardet, international lawyer and investigator, Laurent Husson introduced CLIMATE CITY through a handful of balloons tied to the speaker’s lectern.  The balloons are primarily related to the world of childhood but they are also very much representative of CLIMATE CITY. They provided a connection with the T-C60 balloons that will be deployed over cities to help them adapt to climate change as part of CLIMATE CITY’s ambition to make cities more resilient and so save the planet for future generations.

During the “City in the Clouds” round table, the question “How to deal with urban densification?” was explored, discussed and studied by the four speakers: Sybil Cosnard from City Linked, Michel Derdevet, Secretary General of Enedis, teacher and essayist, Dominique Faure, Vice-President of Toulouse Metropole and Mayor of Saint–Orens and Laurent Husson, President of CLIMATE CITY.

Climate City Biomim’Expo

The third edition of Biomim’expo, the major gathering devoted to biomimicry and bio-inspired innovations, was held on 6 September at the Paris Hôtel de Ville.

Biomimicry refers to a process of innovation and engineering that aims to draw inspiration from nature to create or improve technologies or all kinds of human activities. Biomimicry can be applied to fields such as medicine, scientific research, industry, economics, architecture and urban planning, agriculture, ecosystem management and planning, and many others.

It is this vast, rich and fascinating subject that was discussed at the Paris City Hall on 6 September last in the presence of a host of guests and speakers. For this third year, the theme was “The Bio-inspired City of Tomorrow”. As cities are very special ecosystems, growing exponentially and completely built by humans, the debates and interventions of each of the participants enriched lively discussions on what the “City of Tomorrow” should be like.

In this context, Laurent Husson presented Climate City and highlighted the link between biomimicry and the anticipation of climate change. Indeed, the operator, although not directly inspired by biomimicry, will however allow the players involved in the construction of cities to understand local climates and determine how to optimise such solutions, as inspired from nature. For example, Climate City is in a position to advise cities on the places where there is the most urgent need to introduce greenery or which natural phenomena should be recreated where in the city. Climate City will thus be in a position to orchestrate the appropriate use of innovation resulting from biomimicry.

It is from this perspective that the teams working at the A. Béchu Architecture Agency and partners of Climate City have devised what will be the operator’s Research and Development Centre. A building inspired by nature, respectful of the environment and designed to embody sustainable innovation.

Following on from Laurent Husson’s address, the sequence “Biomimicry for resilient and regenerative cities to serve the climate” brought together among others Jean Jouzel, climatologist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Jean-Louis Missika, Deputy to the Mayor of Paris, and Michèle Sabban, Honorary President R20 Paris France. An enlightening sequence of contributions all part of an exceptional day.

This one-day event will be supplemented and extended by a second day, on 23 October at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie de la Villette, where various sections of the public, players and stakeholders will be able to discover a wide range of initiatives in favour of the environment.

Climate City will of course be present on a stand, alongside its partner the A. Béchu Architecture Agency. We look forward to seeing you there to talk about what nature has to teach us!

Supported by Le Village by CA

Mathilde Lorenzi, CLIMATE CITY’s Expert member of the Strategy Committee Advisor in charge of institutional relations and public affairs was interviewed by 01netTV at Le Village by CA in Paris.

CLIMATE CITY RECEIVES BACKING FROM CRÉDIT AGRICOLE’S LE VILLAGE BY CA OPEN INNOVATION NETWORK

CLIMATE CITY is working in collaboration with the renowned laboratory at Columbia University in New York (the CWC, Columbia Water Center) to prepare for the deployment of a demonstrator to be located in North Manhattan. In this context, CLIMATE CITY’ managers had the opportunity to discover the American branch of the global network dedicated to open innovation:  Villages by CA.
These Villages are run by Crédit Agricole’s Regional Banks and are present in 25 major cities around the world including New York.

With the aim of benefiting from this network in New York, but also in Paris and Shanghai, CLIMATE CITY put in a competitive proposal to Village by CA at rue la Boetie in Paris last April. Early in June, CLIMATE CITY were announced as the winners. Thanks to the confidence shown in the business, it will benefit from the support of Village by CA in Paris and the rest of the world for two years.

Working in Canada, a priority

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE REQUIRES ACTION ON ALL CONTINENTS, ALL REGIONS OF THE WORLD.

Its consequences locally and more specifically at an urban scale are especially visible in North America. Other regions of the world may more urgently require action to adapt to climate change but with its heat islands, pollution and heavier rainfall the North American urban climate is very much in the forefront of such changes. This calls for a complete rethink on how the main urban areas are organised.

A number of laboratories at Columbia University in New York and at NASA, especially in Huntsville, Alabama, are now helping CLIMATE CITY to envisage the creation of research and development teams in the United States. This initiative should provide the basis for a real deployment of CLIMATE CITY services in more than ten North American cities (services dedicated to anticipating medium- to long-term local climate phenomena and adaptation of cities to climate change generally).

This is what provides the background to the CLIMATE CITY Company considering a location in North America. The likely location is Quebec, considered to be an ideal place to combine the proximity of aeronautics and space know-how and scientific and technological sensitivity to the major climate change issues. Meanwhile, the operator has already found sturdy partners in Montreal to film its Web Series dedicated to raising awareness about climate change. Indeed, the first episode of the series has already been filmed. This took place early in February at the 5600K studio based at Trois Rivières.

Launch of Citizen Klimate

THE WEB SERIES TO RAISE AWARENESS ON URBAN CLIMATE ISSUES

The first element of the Climate People Project, the Citizen Klimate Web Series, will soon be launched on the Web. This web series aims to raise inter-generational awareness about climate change issues in cities. It will seek to make it easier for everyone to understand, analyse and decipher the terms and issues of urban climate, a subject little known to the general public.

CLIMATE CITY is working to significantly improve knowledge of the urban climate with the aim of preventing natural disasters and better anticipating climate phenomena right in the heart of our cities. Improving living conditions and public health are among the main concerns of CLIMATE CITY. We dream of uniting a community of individuals throughout the world around the issue of urban climate with Climate People. This community and the associated programme under the same name will seek to democratise and raise awareness as to the urban climate and its challenges.

To learn more, it’s here.

Climate City at the COP 22 and “Les Respirations”

NOVEMBER 2016 : TWO LOCATIONS AND TWO EVENTS ON ONE TOPIC – THE CLIMATE

The “Respirations” conference is to be held in Paris on 15 November at the Cité de la Mode et du Design. Organised by Thomas Kerting, President of the conference and Mathilde Lorenzi, Delegate General, this global forum is the first conference 100% dedicated to air quality. “Respirations” will bring together political, economic, academic, legal and associative figures around a series of round tables to discuss air quality issues.

This year’s programme to include three sessions to address the issue of air quality :

A first session will focus on Health with a round table entitled “The Air Environment: How Does Air Make Us Sick?”. This will be followed by a second session on Indoor Air, featuring a round table entitled “From low-energy buildings to buildings for good breathing”. The third and final session will be on Outdoor Air with the theme “Making the smart city breathe”.

Winner of last year’s Grand Prix Générali, Climate City will again be present among the participants in “Respirations” this year. The team will share a stand with the A. Béchu Architecture Agency, Climate City’s partners and friends.

For further information on the forum: www.lesrespirations.org

Following on from the 21st Conference of the Parties held in Paris in December 2015, COP22 will take place in Marrakech, from 7 to 18 November. Climate City will also be present at this global event, to pursue discussions on climate action throughout the year. Indeed, one of the main objectives of the Paris Agreements is to limit the increase in average global warming to below 2°C as compared with the beginning of the industrial era. Many countries such as China, the United States and France have now ratified the Paris Agreement. The necessary threshold of countries representing 55% of greenhouse gas emissions has therefore been reached and the Paris Agreement will come into force at the beginning of COP22.

The issues facing this Conference of the Parties are to implement the actions proposed in Paris. Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, presented COP22 as a “conference of action, innovation and solution sharing, which should contribute to the implementation of the results of COP21 by strengthening the mobilisation of all state and non-state stakeholders.”
